LONDON, England — Harry Kane has won the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or, becoming the first Englishman in 25 years to claim football’s most prestigious individual award after a record-breaking season with Bayern Munich and England.
The 33-year-old striker received the honour at the London Palladium on Monday, 26 October, ending England’s long wait for another winner since Michael Owen claimed the award in 2001.
Kane’s triumph followed an exceptional 2025/26 campaign in which he scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern Munich across all competitions, helping the German club secure a domestic league and cup double. His tally for club and country reached 73 goals, underlining his remarkable consistency in front of goal.
Kane Beats Mbappé and Yamal to the Ballon d’Or
Kane finished ahead of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé, who took second place, while Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal finished third.
Spain midfielder Rodri placed fourth, with Lionel Messi completing the top five.
The competition for the award was particularly strong, with several of the world’s leading attackers enjoying outstanding seasons. However, Kane’s combination of individual statistics, team success and influence in major matches proved decisive with the voting jury.
The Bayern Munich striker also enjoyed an impressive international campaign, scoring six goals at the World Cup as England reached the semi-finals.
A Remarkable Journey to Football’s Biggest Individual Prize
Kane’s Ballon d’Or victory represents the culmination of a career built on perseverance and consistent goalscoring.
After coming through Tottenham Hotspur’s system and spending time on loan at several clubs early in his career, he established himself as one of Europe’s most reliable strikers.
His move to Bayern Munich in 2023 brought the team trophies that had eluded him in England. The 2025/26 season proved particularly successful, with Kane combining his natural finishing ability with intelligent link-up play and leadership.
Speaking after receiving the award, Kane expressed his excitement and thanked those who had supported him throughout his career.
He also highlighted the importance of hard work and perseverance, encouraging young players to keep pursuing their ambitions despite setbacks.
Alexia Putellas Wins Her Third Women’s Ballon d’Or
Spain international Alexia Putellas claimed the Women’s Ballon d’Or for the third time, adding another major individual honour to her collection.
Putellas was recognised after helping Barcelona enjoy a successful 2025/26 campaign, during which the club won a treble and the Spanish Super Cup.
The midfielder moved to Women's Super League side London City Lionesses in July after spending 14 years at Barcelona.
Her latest triumph further strengthens her place among the most decorated players in women’s football.
