KUMASI, Ghana — Asante Kotoko secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Karela United in the Ghana Premier League on Thursday evening, marking a positive start to life without former head coach Eric Tinkler.
Isaac Opoku Agyemang scored the decisive goal in the fourth minute at the Baba Yara Stadium. The striker finished neatly from a cutback by Emmanuel Sanja after a well-worked team move, giving the Porcupine Warriors an early advantage.
The early strike provided the perfect response to Kotoko’s previous 2-0 home defeat to Aduana FC, which had been their first loss of the season. That result was followed by the departure of South African coach Tinkler, who left the club for personal reasons.
Karela United grew into the contest and applied sustained pressure in the second half, creating several opportunities as they searched for an equaliser. However, Kotoko’s defence held firm to protect the clean sheet and claim all three points.
The victory lifts Asante Kotoko to eight points from five matches, placing them third in the early Ghana Premier League standings. Their position remains provisional pending the completion of the remaining Matchday 5 fixtures over the weekend.
For Karela United, the defeat leaves them with six points from five games. Despite a stronger second-half showing, they were unable to convert their possession into goals.
The result offers Kotoko a much-needed boost as the club transitions into a new chapter under the interim technical structure led by Director of Football Stanley Purl Menzo. The Porcupine Warriors will look to build on this foundation as they continue their campaign for major honours this season.
