Shanghai, China: Alexander Zverev heads into the 2026 Rolex Shanghai Masters as the top seed with a major opportunity to strengthen his push for the ATP world No. 1 ranking.
The German arrives in Shanghai following a standout season in which he has already won two Grand Slam titles and accumulated a Tour-leading 58 victories. He will now look to add the Shanghai Masters title to an increasingly impressive 2026 campaign.
Zverev chasing another landmark achievement
Zverev has established himself as one of the leading players on the ATP Tour this season, winning the French Open and US Open and building significant momentum on hard courts.
The Shanghai Masters represents another important opportunity. With current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner withdrawing from the tournament because of a lingering knee injury, Zverev's route to the top of the rankings has become considerably more favourable.
Zverev had already moved closer to Sinner in the rankings after his strong 2026 campaign, and another deep run in Shanghai could further reduce the gap.

A difficult Shanghai challenge awaits
Despite arriving as the tournament's top seed, Zverev faces a strong field that includes Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.
Alcaraz is the second seed, while Djokovic is chasing a record fifth Shanghai Masters title and his first triumph at the tournament since 2018. Neither Zverev nor Alcaraz has previously lifted the Shanghai trophy.
Zverev's opening opponent is China's Wu Yibing or a qualifier, according to the tournament draw.
Zverev motivated to finish season strongly
The German has made no secret of his motivation heading into the final stretch of the season.
Speaking ahead of his Shanghai campaign, Zverev emphasised his desire to compete and the important role his family has played throughout his career.
The 29-year-old is also attempting to reach another significant milestone by potentially becoming the second German man after Boris Becker to reach world No. 1.
Shanghai provides another major opportunity
The Rolex Shanghai Masters runs from 7 to 18 October at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena and is one of the final ATP Masters 1000 events of the season.
For Zverev, the tournament represents more than another Masters 1000 campaign. With Sinner absent and the German enjoying the best season of his career, Shanghai could prove crucial in his pursuit of the sport's ultimate ranking prize.
A strong run would also strengthen his claim as one of the dominant players of 2026 and potentially take him another step closer to becoming Germany's next men's world No. 1.
