Tanzania 0–6 Canada: Chukwu brace inspires Canucks to emphatic U-20 World Cup victory

Katowice, Poland: Canada produced a dominant second-half display to thrash Tanzania 6–0 at the Arena Katowice on Friday, keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup alive.

Canada entered the final Group B fixture needing a strong result after taking just one point from their opening two matches. They delivered in emphatic fashion, scoring five times after the break to complete their biggest win of the tournament.

• Canada: Ester Maseke 7' (own goal), Olivia Chisholm 49', Annabelle Chukwu 54', 66', Kaylee Hunter 76', Liana Tarasco 85'

• Tanzania: No goals

Canada took an early lead in the seventh minute when Tanzania defender Ester Maseke inadvertently turned the ball into her own net.

Tanzania managed to stay within touching distance for the remainder of the first half, with Canada holding a narrow 1–0 advantage at the interval. The Africans had entered the tournament as debutants and were already facing a difficult task after defeats to Brazil and England.

The game changed dramatically after half-time.

Canada doubled their advantage in the 49th minute through Olivia Chisholm, whose powerful long-range effort gave Tanzania goalkeeper Winfrida Gerald little chance. FIFA described the strike as a potential contender for the tournament's best goal.

Five minutes later, Annabelle Chukwu made it 3–0 from close range before the Canadian captain struck again in the 66th minute to complete her brace.

Chukwu's second goal came after a dangerous Canadian attack, with Jeneva Hernandez-Gray providing the assist. The forward's two-goal performance earned her the Visa Player of the Match award.

Canada continued to attack as Tanzania struggled to contain their opponents. Kaylee Hunter added the fifth in the 76th minute, again benefiting from Hernandez-Gray's creativity, before Liana Tarasco completed the scoring in the 85th minute.

The statistics reflected Canada's dominance. They finished with 60 per cent possession, 19 shots and eight attempts on target, compared with Tanzania's nine shots and just one on target.

The victory leaves Canada on four points, level with England in Group B. Brazil topped the group with nine points, while England ultimately advanced ahead of Canada after the two teams finished level on points, head-to-head record, goal difference and goals scored, with England's superior team conduct score deciding the final position. Canada must now wait to see whether four points will be enough to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.

For Tanzania, however, the defeat brought their debut U-20 Women's World Cup campaign to an end without a point. Captain Jamila Mnunduka said the experience of competing against Brazil, Canada and England would provide valuable lessons for the young team.

Canada's emphatic victory therefore keeps their tournament dream alive, while Tanzania leave Poland with valuable experience from their historic first appearance on the global U-20 stage.
