Spain 11–0 New Caledonia: Segura scores four as La Rojita storm into U-20 World Cup knockouts

SOSNOWIEC, Poland: Spain produced one of the most dominant performances in FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup history on Thursday, thrashing debutants New Caledonia 11–0 to seal their place in the knockout stages of the 2026 tournament.

Celia Segura was the star of the show, scoring four goals as La Rojita matched the competition's record winning margin. Spain's victory equalled France's 11–0 triumph over Fiji in 2024 as the biggest win in the history of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.

• Spain: Pau Comendador 10', 49', Marisa Garcia 17', 45+1', Celia Segura 33', 46', 53', 65' (pen), Alba Cerrato 43', Carla Julia 89', Rosalia Dominguez 90+4'

• New Caledonia: No goals

Spain had already defeated Nigeria 2–0 in their opening Group F match and entered the encounter knowing victory would guarantee their progression to the last 16.

David Aznar made several changes to his starting line-up, but the reshuffled side showed no signs of lacking attacking quality. Spain immediately took control and created a succession of opportunities against a New Caledonia team making its first appearance at the tournament.

The breakthrough arrived in the 10th minute, when Pau Comendador opened the scoring. Marisa Garcia doubled the advantage seven minutes later before Segura made it 3–0 in the 33rd minute.

Alba Cerrato added a fourth in the 43rd minute, while Garcia struck again deep into first-half stoppage time to give Spain a 5–0 lead at the interval.

Spain showed no mercy after the restart.

Segura scored just one minute into the second half to complete her hat-trick, before Comendador added her second of the afternoon in the 49th minute.

Segura then completed her extraordinary individual performance with two more goals. Her fourth came from the penalty spot in the 65th minute, taking her personal tally to four and putting her among the leading scorers in the tournament.

With the result already beyond doubt, Spain continued to attack in search of an historic scoreline. Carla Julia made it 10–0 in the 89th minute before Rosalia Dominguez completed the rout in the fourth minute of added time.

New Caledonia goalkeeper Elizabeth Aben was repeatedly called upon throughout the contest and produced several saves despite conceding 11 goals. Spain finished with 87 per cent possession and 34 shots on target, underlining the extent of their dominance.

The victory takes Spain to six points from two matches and confirms their place in the Round of 16 for a fifth consecutive FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. They have also scored 13 goals without conceding in their opening two matches.

New Caledonia, meanwhile, remain without a point after two matches and will finish their group campaign against Nigeria.

Spain will conclude their Group F campaign against China PR on Sunday, September 13, with top spot at stake. China currently have four points after drawing 0–0 with Nigeria.
