Power Dynamos Arrive in Kigali Ahead of CAF Champions League Clash with Al Merrikh

KIGALI, Rwanda — Power Dynamos FC have arrived safely in the Rwandan capital ahead of their CAF Champions League preliminary round first-leg encounter against Sudanese side Al Merrikh.

The Zambian champions landed at Kigali International Airport at 22:03 hours on Tuesday evening aboard a RwandAir flight. The squad and technical team completed the journey without incident as they begin final preparations for Saturday’s match.

Power Dynamos will face Al Merrikh at the Amahoro Stadium on Saturday, 5 September, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00hrs. The fixture forms the first leg of the first preliminary round of the 2026/27 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.

The match is being staged in Rwanda due to the ongoing security situation in Sudan, which has required several Sudanese clubs to host their continental home ties at neutral venues. Amahoro Stadium has previously served as a temporary base for such fixtures.

Power Dynamos, popularly known as the Aba Yellow, earned their place in the competition by securing the Zambia Super League title last season. The Kitwe-based side reached the group stage in the previous edition of the Champions League and will be aiming to navigate the preliminary rounds successfully once again.

The squad is expected to settle into their hotel accommodation in Kigali before beginning training sessions on the ground. Coach and players will use the remaining days to adapt to local conditions and fine-tune their approach for the contest against Al Merrikh.

Al Merrikh remain one of Sudan’s traditional powerhouses with a strong continental pedigree. Despite the challenges of playing away from home, the Red Devils will present a stern test for the Zambian champions.

Power Dynamos will look to secure a positive result in the first leg that leaves them well placed for the return fixture in Zambia the following week. A strong performance in Kigali would boost their prospects of progressing to the next stage of Africa’s premier club competition.

The arrival of the team marks the formal start of their continental campaign for the new season. Supporters back home will be hoping the Aba Yellow can make a solid beginning to their African journey when they take to the field on Saturday evening.
