She is already a gold medallist at these Games. On Thursday she anchored Bahrain’s mixed 4x400m quartet to victory in a Games record 3:12.87, splitting 48.9 on the last leg with Isah Musa, Aisha Abdullah and Alaa Sami. India and Vietnam finished second and third.
Other women through to the individual final included Zahra Zarei Manoujan of Iran (52.00), Jonbibi Hukmova of Uzbekistan (52.05), Prachi of India (53.46) and Nanako Matsumoto of Japan (53.48). Malaysia’s Shereen Samson Vallabouy, bronze medallist in Hangzhou three years ago, went out in 54.03.
Naser remains one of Asia’s outstanding one-lap runners when fully fit, a former world champion whose best times sit far quicker than Friday’s heat. The 53-second run was about qualification, not a peak performance.
Bahrain have enjoyed a strong start on the Nagoya track. Olympic steeplechase champion Winfred Yavi won the women’s 10,000m and Edidiong Odiong took 100m bronze. Attention now turns to whether Naser can add a second Asian Games 400m title to the relay gold already won.
