“This game was not bad but was not good too. Technically we were not very very good but at the end the state of mind helped us,” Chelle said after Friday’s match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
He added that the players’ attitude decided the night. “The state of mind was good. They gave everything for the jersey, for the country, and I was very happy.”
Madagascar led in the 16th minute when Clément Couturier headed in Ryan Ponti’s cross. Nigeria levelled before half-time through debutant George Ilenikhena, starting on his first call-up. Substitute Moses Usor won it after coming on for Samuel Chukwueze, beating two defenders and finishing past the goalkeeper.
Moses Simon won his 100th cap. Chelle said a low block forced Nigeria wide. “When you play against a low block, you have to pass by the side… to make some crosses.” He used substitutions to inject energy as the Eagles chased the winner.
The result keeps Chelle unbeaten in regulation time in competitive matches since he took charge in January 2025. It was not a polished display. Madagascar were compact and dangerous on the break; Nigeria needed character more than control.
Attention turns to Guinea-Bissau. Chelle said the squad must study the performance and move on quickly. Three points from Uyo start the qualifying group. The coach’s own verdict is that the scoreline flattered the football, but not the fight.
