The 44-year-old replaces Spanish coach Miguel Corral Torreira, who left this week after a slow start to the 2026/27 season. Chiefs unveiled Letsholonyane on Friday. He flew in from Johannesburg after leaving an assistant role under Thabo Senong at Zimbabwe’s FC Platinum.
Letsholonyane won 57 caps for South Africa and played at the World Cup and AFCON. He is best known as a Kaizer Chiefs playmaker. His coaching path has included Pimville Young Stars, AmaZulu, Matebele FC, FC Platinum, South Africa’s U20 side and the Bafana Bafana CHAN setup.
He already knows the Botswana league. At Matebele earlier this year he helped the club stay in the top flight and was nominated for Coach of the Season. He left when contract talks stalled, then joined Senong in Zimbabwe for a short spell.
Mochudi Centre Chiefs, known as Magosi or Maaparankwe, are four-time Botswana champions. Their last league title was in 2014/15. Jwaneng Galaxy and Gaborone United have dominated since. After three matches this season the club sit in mid-table, with reports placing them third or seventh depending on the latest round.
Director of football Stanton Fredericks has been involved in the search. Letsholonyane’s brief is to restore a club that once set the standard in Kgatleng and Gaborone.
For Yeye it is a first head-coach post at one of Botswana’s traditional giants, after a season split between Matebele and Platinum. For Chiefs it is a bet on a familiar name with local knowledge and a playing pedigree that still carries weight in southern African football.
