The move marks a significant shift for one of football’s biggest global stars. Mbappé had been with Nike since the beginning of his career in 2006.
On announced the partnership on Friday, describing it as the start of the brand’s major push into football. The company also confirmed that 1998 World Cup winner Thierry Henry has been appointed as its football director.
“Today, Swiss sportswear brand On announces its entry into football alongside football champion Kylian Mbappe, marking the beginning of the brand’s journey into the world’s biggest sport,” the company said in a statement.
Mbappé said: “From the beginning, what drew me to On was the opportunity to build something entirely new together that will help shape tomorrow’s game.”
On, which was founded in 2010 and has until now focused mainly on running and tennis footwear, plans to launch its first football boots next year. Tennis legend Roger Federer, who is a shareholder in the company, previously left Nike to join the Zurich-based brand towards the end of his career.
The financial details of Mbappé’s contract have not been disclosed. His departure is a notable blow for Nike, which had made the Real Madrid striker one of the leading faces of its football division. Mbappé had gradually taken over as Nike’s top football ambassador from Cristiano Ronaldo.
Nike still retains high-profile players including Erling Haaland and Vinicius Junior under contract. The switch follows Spanish star Lamine Yamal’s move from Nike to Adidas in 2024.
