Jordan Ayew Joins Sheffield United on One-Year Deal

Sheffield, England: Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has joined Championship side Sheffield United on a one-year contract, completing his move to the Blades as a free agent following the expiration of his Leicester City deal.

The 34-year-old forward was confirmed as Sheffield United’s latest signing on Tuesday, with the club completing the deal to fill the final place in manager Chris Wilder’s 25-man squad.

Ayew became a free agent after leaving Leicester City at the end of last season following the club’s relegation from the Championship to League One. He now returns to the Championship with Sheffield United, bringing more than a decade of experience in English football.

Wilder welcomes experienced Ghana captain

Wilder expressed his delight at securing Ayew, highlighting the Ghanaian’s experience at the highest level and his versatility across the forward line.

“We're talking about someone here with bags of experience from right at the top level of the game,” Wilder said.

“Only a few months ago he was captaining Ghana in the World Cup, so he's someone with real pedigree.”

The Sheffield United manager also praised Ayew’s previous Championship experience and ability to play in multiple attacking positions.

“He did well at this level last season in difficult circumstances and has played all across the front positions during his career which gives us plenty of options.”

Ayew: ‘I didn't think twice’

Ayew revealed that the move came together quickly after Wilder contacted him while he was in Ghana.

“It happened really, really quick because I was in Ghana and the manager called me last week,” Ayew said.

“I didn't think twice; I just took the opportunity.”

The Ghana captain added that his immediate objective is to help Sheffield United enjoy a successful campaign.

“The most important thing is for me to help the team and obviously for us to have a great season.”

Ayew brings Championship experience

Ayew spent last season with Leicester City, making 42 Championship appearances and scoring six goals as the Foxes suffered relegation to League One.

His career in England has included spells with Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City, while he began his senior career in France with Marseille before also representing Sochaux and Lorient.

The Ghana international has also accumulated more than 500 competitive club appearances, giving Wilder a highly experienced option as Sheffield United look to strengthen their attack.

Ayew’s arrival also provides another opportunity for the veteran forward to continue his long career in English football, with Sheffield United hoping his experience, versatility and leadership can contribute to their Championship campaign.
