Late goals from Mary Dunstan and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi settled a tight contest at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium after Burkina Faso had frustrated the Nigerian side for more than 80 minutes.
The Flamingos, who arrived in the match as table leaders following a 5-0 win over Niger and a 4-2 victory over Ghana, dominated possession but found it difficult to break down a compact and well-organised Burkinabè defence.
Burkina Faso, who had previously beaten hosts Côte d’Ivoire 1-0 after a heavy defeat to Ghana, sat deep and limited Nigeria’s clear chances for long periods. Coach Akeem Busari’s side continued to press, however, and their persistence was finally rewarded in the 82nd minute.
Mary Dunstan, already on the scoresheet earlier in the tournament, produced a well-taken finish to give Nigeria the lead and shift the momentum firmly in their favour.
The Flamingos refused to sit back and continued to hunt a second goal. Deep into stoppage time, Oluwakemi Adegbuyi found the net to seal the 2-0 win and put the result beyond doubt.
The victory takes Nigeria to nine points from three matches, with a perfect record of three wins, no goals conceded in this fixture, and 11 goals scored across the tournament so far. They remain top of the table in the league-format competition.
Dunstan has now scored in successive matches, while Adegbuyi continues to be one of the Flamingos’ most reliable attacking threats after also scoring against Ghana.
The result underlines Nigeria’s ability to find decisive moments even when opponents defend in numbers. Burkina Faso can take credit for their organisation and discipline, but they were ultimately unable to contain the Flamingos once the first goal went in.
Nigeria’s next assignment is against hosts Côte d’Ivoire on Thursday, 24 September. A positive result there would further strengthen their position as favourites for the regional title and provide valuable preparation ahead of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco later this year.
The Flamingos have now won all three of their opening matches and will travel into the next fixture with confidence and momentum.
