SOSNOWIEC, Poland — Nigeria’s Falconets begin their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign against Spain at the Arena Sosnowiec on Monday.
Kick-off is 17:00 WAT. The match is the second game of a Group F double-header. New Caledonia play China PR at the same venue at 14:00 WAT.
Nigeria were drawn with Spain, China PR and New Caledonia. Spain arrive as one of the favourites in the section. The Falconets come in off a short preparation run that included a 1-0 win over Poland, the hosts, and a 1-1 draw with South Korea. Mary Mamudu scored in both friendlies.
A point or better against Spain would change the arithmetic of the group. China PR are expected to take points off New Caledonia; Nigeria cannot assume two later wins will be enough if they lose heavily here. The last-16 places go to the top two in each group and the four best third-placed teams.
Sunday’s results elsewhere underlined how quickly a first match can settle a section. Ecuador beat Ghana 3-0. Italy overturned the United States. Benin had already shown that an African debutant can take a point from a higher-ranked side.
Nigeria have history at this tournament and a squad built around players who have already been asked to lead at youth level. Spain have depth and a familiar tournament structure. The first 20 minutes in Sosnowiec will tell whether the Falconets can live with that pace.
The group continues later in the week against China PR and New Caledonia. Monday is the night that decides how those fixtures will feel. Kick-off: 17:00 WAT.
