OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso — Nigerian champions Edo Queens produced a stunning performance to defeat hosts USFA 5-1 in the semi-final of the WAFU-B CAF Women’s Champions League Qualifiers on Wednesday.
The emphatic victory books Edo Queens a place in the final of the regional tournament and keeps their hopes of qualifying for the main CAF Women’s Champions League firmly alive.
USFA had entered the match as Group A winners and the only side yet to concede a goal in the competition. The Burkinabè hosts had built a reputation for defensive solidity, but that record was comprehensively dismantled by a clinical Edo Queens attack.
The Nigerian side controlled proceedings from the outset and raced into a commanding lead. Their attacking players combined effectively, exposing gaps in the USFA defence and converting chances with ruthless efficiency. By the final whistle the scoreline reflected a complete dominance that few had predicted against the previously unbeaten hosts.
Edo Queens finished second in Group B after an impressive group-stage campaign that included a 7-0 thrashing of AS GNN and a 3-1 win over ASEC Mimosas. A narrow 1-2 defeat to Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies was their only setback, yet they still progressed as one of the highest-scoring teams in the tournament.
The result in the semi-final underlines the growing strength of the Benin City club under coach Kennedy Boboye. Their ability to dismantle a well-organised defensive unit on foreign soil will boost confidence ahead of the final.
Edo Queens will now face the winners of the other semi-final between Ampem Darkoa Ladies and Dynamique for the right to represent WAFU Zone B at the continental finals. The final is scheduled for later this week in Ouagadougou.
Victory in the zonal final would secure Edo Queens a place among Africa’s elite women’s clubs and mark another significant milestone for Nigerian women’s football on the continental stage. The 5-1 demolition of the hosts has already sent a strong message across the region.
