A dramatic late goal in the first minute of stoppage time from Valerín Loboa proved decisive, sending the South Americans into the semi-finals and ending Nigeria’s campaign.
The match at Stadion Miejski ŁKS Łódź was tightly contested throughout. Both sides created chances in a tense, physical encounter, but clear-cut opportunities remained limited for long periods.
Nigeria were reduced to 10 players in the 79th minute, which shifted the balance of the contest. Colombia continued to press and eventually found the breakthrough deep into added time when Loboa converted to secure a place in the last four.
The Falconets had entered the quarter-final in strong form after a commanding 3-0 victory over England in the Round of 16. Goals from Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu had raised hopes of a deep run in the tournament.
However, Colombia, who had themselves eliminated hosts Poland in the previous round, showed resilience and clinical finishing at the vital moment.
Nigeria’s exit means they fall short of reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 2014. Despite the disappointment, the Falconets showed promising signs throughout the competition, particularly in their attacking play and their ability to recover from a difficult start in the group stage.
Colombia will now advance to face the winner of the other quarter-final in the semi-finals, while Nigeria return home after a campaign that mixed frustration with moments of genuine quality.
