Chelsea 2–2 Hull City: Belloumi double stuns Blues as João Pedro rescues a point

LONDON, England: Chelsea were held to a 2–2 draw by newly promoted Hull City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday as Mohamed Belloumi’s first-half double exposed the Blues’ defensive frailties before João Pedro rescued a point for Xabi Alonso’s side.

Chelsea took an early lead through Morgan Rogers, but Hull produced an impressive response to turn the match around before half-time. João Pedro equalised in the second half, but Chelsea were unable to find a winner despite late pressure.

The result leaves Chelsea on seven points from their opening four Premier League matches, while Hull remain unbeaten with eight points.

Rogers gives Chelsea early advantage

Chelsea started brightly and took the lead in the seventh minute.

João Pedro released Morgan Rogers during a rapid counter-attack, with the England international cutting inside before firing a low effort past Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.

The goal continued Rogers’ excellent start to his Chelsea career, having now scored in each of his first four Premier League appearances for the club.

Pedro Neto came close to extending Chelsea’s advantage soon afterwards, but Tzolakis was equal to his effort.

Hull, however, refused to collapse.

Belloumi turns the game around

Hull equalised in the 28th minute after Chelsea failed to deal with a long clearance.

Ryan Giles won possession and delivered a cross towards the far post, where Jorrel Hato misjudged the ball and Mohamed Belloumi took full advantage, smashing his finish beyond Emiliano Martínez.

The Algerian forward struck again six minutes later to complete a remarkable turnaround.

Following a Hull corner, Chelsea failed to clear their lines and Belloumi reacted quickest, sending a deflected effort past Martínez to put the visitors 2–1 ahead.

Chelsea looked unsettled for the remainder of the first half, with Hull threatening to extend their lead.

João Pedro rescues Chelsea

Alonso responded at half-time by replacing Hato with Pep Chavarría as Chelsea attempted to regain control.

The hosts dominated possession after the restart but struggled to create clear openings against a well-organised Hull defence.

Reece James came close from a free-kick, but Tzolakis produced an important save.

Hull then nearly made it 3–1 when Oli McBurnie found himself in a promising position following a mistake from Martínez, but the Chelsea goalkeeper recovered to make a crucial save.

That intervention proved decisive.

Chelsea finally levelled in the 66th minute when Cole Palmer drove forward before cutting the ball back into the area for João Pedro, who finished powerfully to make it 2–2.

Hull hold firm

Chelsea pushed hard for a winner during the closing stages, with Palmer and Rogers both threatening.

Alonso also introduced Danny Welbeck as Chelsea looked to add more attacking presence, but Hull continued to defend resolutely.

The visitors nearly snatched all three points late on when Mohamed-Ali Cho found himself with a clear opportunity, but Martínez made the necessary save.

Chelsea also appealed for a late penalty following a possible handball, but no spot-kick was awarded.

The final whistle confirmed a valuable point for Hull and another frustrating result for Chelsea.

Chelsea's defensive problems continue

While Chelsea continue to demonstrate considerable attacking quality, their defensive record remains a concern.

The Blues have yet to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League this season and have conceded nine goals across their opening four league matches.

For Hull, the draw extends an outstanding start to life back in the Premier League. Sergej Jakirovic’s side now have eight points from four matches after victories over Manchester United and Coventry City and a draw with Aston Villa.
