LOMÉ, Togo — Two CAF Champions League first-leg ties on Sunday ended level, leaving the second legs to decide who advances from the opening preliminary round.
ASC Kara and ASEC Mimosas drew 1-1 in Togo. E. Assigno put the hosts ahead in the 20th minute. B. Kouyaté equalised for the Ivorian champions in the 40th. The second half produced no further goals. ASEC take an away goal to Abidjan; Kara must score in Côte d’Ivoire to keep the tie alive without extra time or penalties.
In Niamey, Nigelec and MC Alger finished 0-0 at the Stade Général Seyni Kountché. The Algerian side return with a clean sheet and will expect to finish the job at home on Saturday, 12 September. Nigelec’s task is to score in Algeria and then protect that lead.
Sunday’s results sit with a preliminary round already full of tight first legs. Rivers United drew 1-1 away to San Pedro, Young Africans needed stoppage time to draw in Botswana, and Club Africain won 1-0 at home to Djoliba. ASEC, Ivorian Super Cup winners last month, will be favourites in the return. MC Alger, who reached last season’s Champions League group stage, should be likewise in Algiers.
Neither tie is closed. An away goal in Abidjan would force ASEC to win. A single Nigelec strike in Algeria would turn a sterile first leg into a problem for the Mouloudia. The first legs did their work: they removed the possibility of a comfortable night next weekend.
