2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup: Black Princesses Beaten 3-0 by Ecuador on World Cup Debut

SOSNOWIEC, Poland — Ghana’s Black Princesses opened the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup with a 3-0 defeat to Ecuador at the Arena Sosnowiec on Sunday.

Rosa Flores scored in the fifth minute. Doménica Arboleda added a second in the 17th minute and a third in the 69th, beating several defenders before finishing.

Ecuador, appearing at this tournament for the first time, controlled the first half and never let Ghana settle. The Black Princesses had more shots after the interval but could not convert. Ecuador sit top of Group C with three points. France and South Korea drew 1-1 in the section’s other match. Ghana are bottom on goal difference.

It was a difficult start for African sides in Poland. Tanzania lost 4-1 to Brazil on Saturday. Benin earned a historic first World Cup point in a 2-2 draw with Mexico. Ghana now need a result against South Korea on Wednesday, 9 September to keep a realistic path into the knockout rounds.

The GFA women’s account called the afternoon a defeat to regroup from. The scoreline leaves little room for delay. Ecuador have a first win and a first clean sheet at a Women’s U-20 World Cup. Ghana have a first lesson: early goals cost them the game before they had found their rhythm.

Wednesday against Korea is no longer a free hit. It is the match that decides whether this campaign still has a second week.
