Argentina 3–2 Mexico: Late comeback sends La Albiceleste into U-20 Women’s World Cup knockouts

Katowice, Poland: Argentina produced a remarkable late comeback to defeat Mexico 3–2 at Arena Katowice on Friday and secure qualification for the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

The Albiceleste appeared to be heading out of the tournament after Mexico overturned an early deficit and took a 2–1 lead, but Argentina refused to surrender. Alma Velasco Heim equalised late in the second half before Dolo Delgado struck in stoppage time to complete a dramatic turnaround.

• Argentina: Annika Paz 29', Alma Velasco Heim 78', Dolo Delgado 90+2'

• Mexico: Deiry Ramírez 36', 42'

Argentina started brightly and took the lead in the 29th minute. Annika Paz, who had already been among the tournament's leading scorers, connected with a cross from Camila Ochoa to head Argentina in front. The goal took Paz's tournament tally to five.

Mexico responded emphatically. In the 36th minute, Deiry Ramírez produced one of the goals of the tournament, unleashing a spectacular long-range effort from around 30 metres that flew into the top corner beyond the reach of Argentina goalkeeper Priscila Siben.

Ramírez then completed her comeback five minutes later. Alice Soto provided an acrobatic assist into the area, allowing Ramírez to head Mexico into a 2–1 lead shortly before half-time.

Mexico thought they had extended their advantage shortly after the restart when Ramírez found the net again, but the goal was ruled out for handball following a review. That decision proved significant as Argentina gradually regained control of the contest.

With Argentina facing elimination, Alma Velasco Heim levelled the contest in the 78th minute. The Levante midfielder followed up after a free-kick rebounded off the wall and fired home to make it 2–2.

The drama continued into stoppage time. With Mexico desperately searching for the victory they needed to stay alive, Dolo Delgado scored in the 90+2nd minute to complete Argentina's stunning comeback and send the South Americans into the round of 16.

The result secured second place in Group A for Argentina, while Mexico were eliminated from the competition. Poland finished top of the group.

For Mexico, the defeat brought a painful end to their campaign despite Ramírez's outstanding performance. Her two goals against Argentina represented her first strikes at a FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, including a spectacular long-range effort that FIFA described as a potential contender for the tournament's best goal.

For Argentina, however, the night will be remembered for character and resilience. Trailing 2–1 with 12 minutes remaining, the Albiceleste found two late goals to turn a potential group-stage exit into a place in the knockout rounds.
