AEK Athens Edge LASK 1-0 as Marin Free-Kick Seals Champions League Victory

Athens, Greece: AEK Athens began their 2026/27 UEFA Champions League campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over LASK on Tuesday, with Răzvan Marin’s superb first-half free-kick enough to settle a closely contested encounter at the Allwyn Arena.

The Greek champions had to withstand a late push from the Austrian side, but held on to secure three valuable points in their return to Europe’s elite club competition.

Marin produces the decisive moment

After a lively opening, AEK found the breakthrough in the 21st minute when Marin stepped up to take a free-kick just outside the penalty area.

The Romanian midfielder produced a spectacular strike, curling the ball beyond the LASK goalkeeper and into the corner to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

LASK responded positively and created opportunities of their own, but AEK goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli made an important save from Christoph Lang before the interval to preserve his side's advantage.

Jović misses chances as AEK remain in control

AEK forward Luka Jović had an eventful evening but could not find the net.

The Serbian striker had an early opportunity after being played through in the opening minutes, but failed to beat the LASK goalkeeper.

Jović later appeared to have doubled AEK's advantage with a header, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

The former Real Madrid and AC Milan forward continued to threaten, while AEK's attacking play was also boosted by Croatian debutant Lovro Majer, who impressed with his movement and creativity between the lines.

LASK push for an equaliser

LASK refused to sit back and continued searching for an equaliser after the break.

The Austrian champions created several opportunities but lacked the finishing touch needed to beat Brignoli.

AEK gradually regained control of the contest, although the visitors remained dangerous in the closing stages and came close to forcing a late equaliser.

The Greek side ultimately held firm to secure a 1-0 victory.

AEK make winning Champions League return

The result represents an important European statement for AEK, who returned to the Champions League after a seven-year absence.

For LASK, the defeat marked a disappointing return to Europe's premier club competition after 61 years away. The Austrian side had earned their place in the league phase after a remarkable qualifying campaign in which they overturned a four-goal deficit against Celtic.

AEK's victory gives Marko Nikolić's side the perfect start to their Champions League league-phase campaign, while LASK will have to wait for another opportunity to collect their first points.

Final score: AEK Athens 1-0 LASK
