The 33-year-old confirmed the decision on Tuesday through an emotional statement shared on his social media platforms.
“After many unforgettable years on the pitch, the time has come for me to say goodbye to professional football,” Okwi said.
He described the choice as one of the hardest of his life, explaining that football had been far more than a career.
“This has been one of the hardest decisions of my life because football has been more than just a career. It has been my passion, my purpose and a dream I have been blessed to live every single day.”
Okwi singled out representing Uganda as the highest honour of his journey. The former Cranes skipper reflected with pride on wearing the national team jersey and captaining the side.
“Wearing the Uganda Cranes jersey will always hold a special place in my heart. Being trusted with the captain’s armband was an honour and a responsibility I will always cherish.”
He paid tribute to the clubs that gave him opportunities, the coaches who guided him, teammates who shared the dressing room, and opponents who pushed him to improve. Okwi also thanked the fans for their unwavering support through both successes and challenges.
While his playing days are over, Okwi made clear that his relationship with football continues. He plans to remain involved in the game, focusing on its growth and inspiring the next generation of players.
Okwi retires as one of Uganda’s most recognisable modern footballers, having represented several clubs across Africa and abroad while becoming a key figure for the Uganda Cranes through his leadership, commitment and dedication.
