The French tactician highlighted how Nairobi United eliminated Tunisian giants Étoile du Sahel on penalties, despite the significant gap in league strength between the two countries.
“Nairobi United showed it is possible. They knocked out Étoile du Sahel even though the Tunisian league is stronger than ours,” Mette said.
He acknowledged the challenges facing Kenyan teams on the continental stage. “Our league is not at the same level as those in South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia or Morocco. If you face clubs from those countries in the preliminary rounds, the challenge is much greater.”
Tough Path for the Brewers
Tusker were drawn against Sudanese side Al Ahli Madani in the first preliminary round of the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup following Thursday’s draw in Cairo.
The first leg is scheduled for 4–6 September, with the return fixture set for 11–13 September.
Should the Brewers progress, they will face the winner of the tie between South Sudan’s Al-Ghazala SC Wau and Tanzania’s Singida Black Stars for a place in the group stage.
Mette’s side will be aiming to navigate the early rounds successfully and give Kenyan football another strong showing on the continental stage.
