OWERRI, Nigeria — Kun Khalifat FC has formally written to the Nigeria Premier Football League notifying the board of its intention to sell a majority stake in the club, even as the side publicly denied sale reports on its official social media platforms.
In a letter dated 6 August 2026 addressed to the NPFL Chief Operating Officer in Abuja, club president Amaefula Michael stated that shareholders are in the process of transferring majority ownership to a prospective buyer.
The letter reads in part: “On behalf of the shareholders of Kun Khalifat of Owerri, I hereby confirm that we are in the process of handing over majority shares of our company to a prospective buyer. You will be duly informed when the process is concluded. Meanwhile, we appeal to you to commence the process of transfer of ownership to the prospective buyer.”
The NPFL has confirmed receipt of the official correspondence.
Club Issues Public Denial
Despite the formal notification to the league, Kun Khalifat FC moved quickly to dismiss media reports of a sale on its official social media channels. The club described the circulating claims as false and misleading, insisting there were no negotiations or plans to sell and urging fans to rely only on official club communication.
The contradictory positions have created confusion among supporters and observers ahead of the 2026/27 NPFL season.
Further clarity is expected once the ownership process is either completed or formally abandoned.
