Rodrigo Riquelme scored the only goal of the match in the 63rd minute, converting a precise assist from Cucho Hernández to secure the three points for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The result gives Betis an early boost as they look to build momentum in the new season.
The contest remained goalless at half-time, with both teams showing organisation and caution. Betis gradually grew into the game after the interval, particularly following the introduction of Isco, who helped increase their control in midfield and create more threatening positions.
The decisive moment arrived just past the hour mark. A swift move down the right involving Antony and Cucho Hernández ended with the Colombian sliding a well-weighted pass into the path of Riquelme. The attacker finished calmly with his left foot, placing the ball beyond Álex Remiro to give the home side the lead.
Real Sociedad responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser. They created several dangerous moments, including a Luka Sucic effort that struck the post and a late chance for Orri Óskarsson that was denied by a strong save from Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles. Despite their pressure, the visitors were unable to find a way through a resilient Betis defence.
Betis managed the closing stages effectively, limiting Real Sociedad’s clear opportunities and protecting their slender advantage until the final whistle. The victory was built on defensive discipline, clinical finishing when it mattered and a solid collective performance.
For Real Sociedad the defeat extends a difficult run in league matches. While they showed competitiveness and created chances, the lack of a cutting edge in front of goal proved costly once again.
Betis will take confidence from the result and the manner in which they saw out the game. Attention now turns to their next fixture as they look to build on this positive start, while Real Sociedad will seek to convert their promising passages of play into points in the coming weeks.
