PSG Retain UEFA Super Cup with 2-1 Victory over Aston Villa

SALZBURG, Austria — Paris Saint-Germain claimed the 2026 UEFA Super Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at the Red Bull Arena on Wednesday night.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a powerful strike, before 17-year-old Brian Madjo equalised for Villa on the stroke of half-time. Désiré Doué then scored the decisive goal in the 61st minute to secure the trophy for Luis Enrique’s side.

The match marked the traditional curtain-raiser to the new European season, pitting the UEFA Champions League winners against the Europa League champions. PSG, who entered the contest as holders after defeating Tottenham on penalties the previous year, made a strong start and took the lead through Kvaratskhelia’s clinical finish.

Aston Villa responded impressively before the interval. The teenage striker Madjo, making his competitive debut, had already gone close on several occasions before finally converting a cross from John McGinn with a firm volley to level the scores at 1-1.

Luis Enrique introduced Ousmane Dembélé at half-time, and the change proved decisive. Just after the hour mark, Dembélé found Doué with a precise pass, and the young French forward cut inside before finishing calmly to restore PSG’s advantage.

Villa continued to push for an equaliser in the closing stages, but PSG’s defence held firm to protect the lead and secure another piece of European silverware. The victory continues the Parisians’ strong recent record in the competition and gives Enrique’s squad an early boost ahead of the new campaign.

For Aston Villa, the performance offered encouragement despite the defeat, particularly the contribution of Madjo, who became one of the youngest goalscorers in Super Cup history. Both clubs will now turn their attention to domestic and continental fixtures as the 2026/27 season gathers pace.
