JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Kaizer Chiefs produced a strong second-half display to defeat Sekhukhune United 2-0 at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night and make it two wins from two in the Betway Premiership.
Luke Baartman opened the scoring in the 63rd minute with his first goal for the club, before substitute Mduduzi Shabalala added a second late on to seal the three points.
The Amakhosi were made to work hard in a goalless first half against a resolute Sekhukhune side. After the break, however, Fernando Da Cruz’s team increased the tempo and found the breakthrough through a well-worked move involving Langelihle Phili and Dillan Solomons, who set up Baartman to finish calmly.
Shabalala then wrapped up the victory in the 84th minute after being played through by an excellent pass from Siphesihle Ndlovu.
Langelihle Phili was named Betway Man of the Match for an influential performance.
The result keeps Kaizer Chiefs at the top of the early Premiership standings with six points and sets them up for Saturday’s high-profile clash against Mamelodi Sundowns at the same venue.
Sekhukhune United will look to bounce back quickly as the new season continues to take shape.
