Orlando Pirates Seal Fifth Consecutive MTN8 Final Spot with Dominant 3-0 Win

SOWETO, South Africa — Orlando Pirates booked their place in a record-extending fifth consecutive MTN8 final after a clinical 3-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in the semi-final second leg at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

The result completed a commanding 4-0 aggregate triumph, following the Buccaneers’ narrow 1-0 first-leg win in Polokwane, where Deon Hotto scored the only goal.

Pirates broke the deadlock in the 37th minute. A strong run down the left by Yanela Mbuthuma created the opening, and Thapelo Mokobodi met the cross ahead of his marker to guide a composed finish into the far corner. Two minutes later the lead was doubled. A swift counter-attack from a Sekhukhune corner saw Gamphani Lungu break clear one-on-one, and the Zambian forward made no mistake with a cool finish.

With the tie already beyond doubt, Kamogelo Sebelebele added a third goal in stoppage time to put the seal on an impressive afternoon for the home side. Mokobodi was named man of the match for his influential display.

The victory continues Pirates’ remarkable dominance of the competition. The Soweto giants are four-time defending champions and are now the first team in the history of the tournament to reach five successive finals. They have lifted the MTN8 trophy in each of the past four seasons and will attempt to become the first side to win five titles in a row when the final takes place later this season.

Pirates also remain joint-top of the Betway Premiership alongside Mamelodi Sundowns, with both clubs on 10 points after four league matches. Their strong start under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has seen them combine domestic form with cup progress.

Attention now turns to the other semi-final. Golden Arrows hold a 1-0 first-leg advantage over Mamelodi Sundowns after a shock victory in Atteridgeville. The second leg takes place on Sunday at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, with the winners joining Pirates in the final.

For Sekhukhune United the defeat ends their cup run after a competitive campaign. The side showed organisation but were ultimately outclassed by a Pirates team that has made the MTN8 its own in recent years.

The Buccaneers will now prepare for the showpiece knowing they stand on the brink of further history. Another final appearance underlines their status as the most consistent force in South Africa’s premier domestic cup competition.
