NAIROBI, Kenya — The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has postponed all Round One matches of the 2026/27 Kenyan Premier League, which were scheduled to take place between Monday, 31 August and Wednesday, 2 September 2026.
In an official communication to clubs and stakeholders, the federation’s Leagues and Competitions Department confirmed that the decision was taken to allow further deliberations between FKF, the participating clubs and the league sponsors. The talks are intended to provide clear direction and guidance on the management and framework of the new season.
“The Kenya Premier League 2026/27 Round One Fixtures scheduled to be played between Monday, 31st August 2026 and Wednesday, 2nd September 2026 have been postponed,” the statement read. The federation added that the move would enable discussions that will shape how the campaign is administered.
The postponement affects the entire opening programme. Among the fixtures now on hold are newly promoted 3K FC against Mara Sugar at Moi Stadium in Embu, and Mathare United versus APS Bomet at Police Sacco Stadium in Nairobi, both originally set for Monday. Tuesday’s planned matches included Ulinzi Stars hosting defending FKF Cup champions Tusker FC, Migori Youth against Kenya Police, and defending league champions Gor Mahia beginning their title defence against Murang’a SEAL at Nyayo Stadium. Wednesday’s programme featured Nairobi United against KCB, Posta Rangers versus Shabana, and AFC Leopards taking on Bandari.
The delay comes against a backdrop of prolonged uncertainty surrounding the start of the season. Legal disputes over promotion and relegation regulations — specifically the differences between the 2019 and 2025 FKF rules — have created significant disruption. A High Court ruling in Murang’a had recently cleared the way for the league to proceed temporarily under the 2019 regulations while a challenge involving Kariobangi Sharks continues. Despite that decision, disagreements between the federation and several club chairmen over the management of the new campaign remained unresolved.
FKF President Hussein Mohammed had earlier indicated that the proposed 31 August kick-off was not final and that consultations with clubs would continue until an agreement was reached. He also distanced the top leadership from the fixture list that had been circulated, stating it had been published without full authorisation.
No revised dates for Round One or the full-season calendar have yet been announced. The federation has said the new fixtures and overall schedule will be communicated to clubs and other stakeholders as soon as possible.
The latest postponement means clubs that had completed pre-season preparations and were ready to begin their campaigns must now wait further. Players, coaches, sponsors and supporters remain in limbo as the administrative and legal issues surrounding the league’s structure continue to be addressed. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges facing the governance of Kenyan top-flight football as stakeholders seek a stable framework for the 2026/27 season.
