ABUJA, Nigeria — The National Sports Commission (NSC) has cancelled the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) electoral congress that was scheduled to take place on 27 September in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The decision has been taken to pave the way for a thorough reorganisation of the federation. In the interim, the NSC is expected to appoint a normalisation committee that will oversee the running of Nigerian football for a period of three months.
The move comes in the wake of widespread disappointment following the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and other recent setbacks involving Nigeria’s national teams. The Ibrahim Gusau-led executive committee, which was preparing to seek a second term, has been significantly affected by the cancellation.
The normalisation committee is expected to address outstanding issues raised by stakeholders and prepare the ground for a fresh electoral process at a later date. Further official details from the NSC are anticipated in the coming days.
