The Portuguese defensive midfielder is being viewed as a potential alternative should the Magpies fail to complete a move for former Bayern player Pierre-Emile Højbjerg from Marseille.
Palhinha, 31, no longer features in Bayern’s plans and has been made available for transfer after being left out of the squad. The midfielder joined the German club in 2025 for around €50 million following an earlier collapsed deal from Fulham. He spent last season on a successful loan at Tottenham Hotspur, but a permanent move did not materialise due to Bayern’s valuation.
Aston Villa have already confirmed their interest in the player. Newcastle, who recently sold Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães, are looking to strengthen the holding midfield position under new coach Matthias Jaissle.
Should the pursuit of Højbjerg fall through, Palhinha could emerge as a realistic option for the Premier League side as they continue their summer rebuild.
