Manchester City Stage Late Comeback to Beat Bournemouth 2-1

MANCHESTER, England — Manchester City began the Enzo Maresca era with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Marcus Tavernier gave the visitors a first-half lead before late goals from Marc Guéhi and Joško Gvardiol turned the match around and secured the three points for the hosts.

Bournemouth took the lead in the 26th minute when Tavernier finished clinically. The Cherries defended resolutely after the goal and looked set to claim a notable away win as the game entered its closing stages.

City increased the pressure in the second half and finally equalised in the 84th minute. Guéhi headed home to level the score and shift the momentum firmly in the home side’s favour.

The winner arrived in stoppage time. Gvardiol converted from close range after a pass from substitute Rayan Cherki, completing a rapid turnaround. The goal was confirmed following a VAR check.

The result gives Maresca a winning start in his first Premier League match in charge of Manchester City. The late recovery demonstrated the side’s character and ability to respond under pressure.

Bournemouth will feel disappointed after leading for so long and coming close to a landmark victory at the Etihad. Their organisation and first-half efficiency had put them in a strong position before the late collapse.

City will take confidence from the comeback as they look ahead to the next fixtures. The three points provide an important early boost in the new campaign under the new head coach.
