Mamudu Mary Strikes as Falconets Edge Poland 1-0 in World Cup Warm-Up

BRZEG, Poland — Nigeria’s Falconets recorded a valuable 1-0 victory over hosts Poland in their first preparation match ahead of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Mary Mamudu scored the decisive goal in first-half stoppage time, finding the net in the 45th minute plus one to give Nigeria the lead just before the interval at the Municipal Stadium in Brzeg.

The Falconets successfully protected their slender advantage throughout the second half, limiting Poland’s attacking threats and securing a hard-fought win against the tournament hosts. The result provides a significant confidence boost for coach Moses Aduku’s side as they continue their final preparations on European soil.

The friendly formed part of Nigeria’s build-up to the global tournament, which is being staged in Poland from late August through September. The Falconets will now turn their attention to their second and final warm-up fixture against South Korea on Tuesday, 1 September, at the Remes Resort & Spa Football Stadium.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group F alongside Spain, China PR and New Caledonia. The Falconets open their World Cup campaign against Spain on 7 September, before facing China three days later and concluding the group stage against New Caledonia on 13 September.

Nigeria remain one of the most consistent performers in the history of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and will be aiming to go beyond their previous best of reaching the final on two occasions. The victory over Poland offers an encouraging start to their European stay and will help the squad adapt to local conditions ahead of the main competition.

Mamudu’s timely strike underlines the attacking threat within the Falconets squad and gives the technical crew positive indicators as they fine-tune tactics and selections in the remaining days before the tournament begins.
