The 19-year-old delivered a dominant performance in the women’s shot put final at Hayward Field, becoming the first Nigerian athlete to win a World U20 title in a field event in the 40-year history of the championships.
Oji’s victory came just nine days after she claimed silver at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She was the only competitor to throw beyond the 18-metre mark, opening with 18.05m before improving to the winning distance of 18.08m.
Belsy Quinonez of Ecuador took silver with a throw of 17.90m, while Germany’s Emily Scherf secured bronze with 17.23m.
The result marks a major milestone for Nigerian athletics and underlines Oji’s rapid rise following her switch of allegiance earlier this year.
