LE HAVRE, France — AS Monaco made a winning start to their Ligue 1 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Le Havre at the Stade Océane on Sunday.
Eric Dier scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute, heading home from a corner to give the visitors an early lead that they defended resolutely until the final whistle.
Monaco controlled large periods of the contest and created several opportunities to extend their advantage. Dier’s clinical header from a set-piece proved decisive as the Red and Whites secured a clean sheet on the road.
Le Havre struggled to break down a well-organised Monaco defence and were unable to find an equaliser despite periods of pressure in the second half. The home side had a goal disallowed by VAR mid-way through the first half, which proved a significant moment in the match.
The result provides Monaco with three points and a positive start under their new campaign. Dier’s early contribution set the tone for a disciplined away performance that limited Le Havre’s attacking threat.
Monaco will take confidence from the solid defensive display and the ability to grind out a result on the opening weekend. Le Havre, meanwhile, will look to respond quickly after a narrow home defeat in their first match of the season.
The victory leaves Monaco well placed early in the Ligue 1 table as they turn their attention to the next round of fixtures.
