The former Girona boss joins Ajax on a new chapter as the Eredivisie side begins a major rebuild ahead of the 2026/27 season. The appointment was confirmed by the club alongside strong praise from Technical Director Jordi Cruyff, who described Míchel as the ideal coach to restore Ajax’s identity and attacking philosophy.
Speaking after the announcement, Jordi Cruyff said:
“Míchel is an ambitious and demanding coach. I am convinced he will instil his vision and his intensive way of working within our squad. His approach fits Ajax.”
The Spanish tactician arrives in Amsterdam after an unforgettable spell with Girona FC, where he transformed the club into one of the most exciting teams in Spanish football. Despite Girona’s relegation from La Liga this past season, Míchel’s reputation remained highly respected across Europe due to his attacking style, tactical intelligence and ability to develop young talents.
Ajax see Míchel as the perfect manager to lead the club back to the top of Dutch and European football.
The 50-year-old coach has signed a two-year contract and is expected to immediately begin preparations for the new campaign, with Ajax aiming to bounce back after a disappointing domestic season that saw the club miss out on Champions League football.
Míchel also expressed his excitement after completing the move, stating that Ajax remains one of the biggest football institutions in Europe with a rich history of developing elite young players.
The appointment also marks another major decision under Jordi Cruyff’s new leadership structure at Ajax. Since becoming Technical Director earlier this year, Cruyff has focused on rebuilding the sporting project with a clear football identity inspired by the club’s traditional attacking philosophy.
Ajax supporters will now hope Míchel can bring stability, exciting football and silverware back to the Johan Cruyff Arena as the club prepares for a crucial new era.
Reports in the Netherlands suggest Ajax are also planning several squad reinforcements this summer to support the new manager ahead of the upcoming campaign.
