FIFA Confirms Somali Referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan Will Miss World Cup After US Entry Denial

World football governing body FIFA has confirmed that respected Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan will not officiate at the upcoming FIFA World Cup after being denied entry into the United States despite reportedly travelling with a valid visa.

The development has sparked widespread reaction across African football circles, with many expressing disappointment over the absence of one of the continent’s most experienced and respected match officials from football’s biggest tournament.

According to Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, Artan had obtained a valid United States visa before travelling. However, complications reportedly arose due to Somalia being included on a travel ban list introduced under former US President Donald Trump’s administration.

In an official statement, FIFA clarified that it has no authority over immigration decisions made by host nations.

“FIFA is not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications, and has been informed by authorities that Mr Artan's status will not be changed at present,” FIFA stated.

The world football body further added:

“In line with previous FIFA events, a host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and who is admitted into their country.”

Artan has earned significant recognition across African football over the years for his calm officiating style and consistent performances in major continental competitions. His exclusion is being viewed as a major setback not only for Somalia but also for African refereeing representation on the global stage.

The incident has also reignited conversations around immigration policies and the challenges international sporting participants can face when major tournaments are hosted in countries with strict entry regulations.

Many football supporters and officials across Africa have continued to voice support for the Somali referee, describing the situation as unfortunate given his standing within the game.

With the FIFA World Cup drawing closer, the controversy surrounding Artan’s absence is expected to remain a major talking point in global football discussions.
