The Oklahoma City Thunder responded in style on Wednesday night, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 122-113 in Game 2 of the NBA Western Conference Finals to tie the series 1-1. Led by a dominant performance from NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder bounced back from their heartbreaking Game 1 defeat with energy, aggression and a much-improved offensive display.
Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 30 points and nine assists, controlling the pace of the game and delivering key baskets whenever the Spurs attempted a comeback. The Thunder also received huge contributions from the bench, with Alex Caruso scoring 17 points while Cason Wallace and Jared McCain added 12 points each.
After both teams ended the first quarter tied at 31-31, Oklahoma City seized momentum in the second period with a 31-point quarter that gave them breathing space heading into halftime. Although the Spurs fought back strongly in the third quarter behind Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, the Thunder maintained control late in the game to secure the important home victory.
San Antonio Spurs were once again powered by Victor Wembanyama, who recorded 21 points and 17 rebounds in another impressive playoff showing. Rookie guard Stephon Castle also stepped up with 25 points and eight assists, keeping San Antonio within striking distance for most of the night.
One major difference in the contest was Oklahoma City’s bench production and defensive intensity. The Thunder dominated the Spurs 57-25 in bench scoring and forced multiple turnovers that led to easy transition baskets. Oklahoma City also capitalized on key moments in the fourth quarter when Gilgeous-Alexander took over offensively to shut down San Antonio’s comeback hopes.
The victory levels the Western Conference Finals at 1-1 as the series now shifts to San Antonio for Game 3. After losing the dramatic double-overtime opener, the Thunder answered with the type of performance expected from a championship contender, while the Spurs will look to regain control on home court.
