NHL roundup: Bruins, Devils and Oilers record convincing victories

Boston, United States — The Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils and Edmonton Oilers delivered impressive victories on Saturday, 10 October, as the 2026–27 National Hockey League season continued with a busy schedule of fixtures.

Boston defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 5–1, New Jersey overcame the Vancouver Canucks 4–1, while Edmonton beat the San Jose Sharks 3–1 to extend their unbeaten run in regulation time.

Bruins overwhelm Flyers with three-goal final period

The Boston Bruins produced a strong finish to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 5–1 at TD Garden, scoring three times in the third period to secure their fourth win in six games.

Fraser Minten led the way with a three-point performance, scoring once and providing two assists. Pavel Zacha and Mason Lohrei also found the net, while Marat Khusnutdinov and Casey Mittelstadt added further goals.

Porter Martone scored Philadelphia’s only goal on the power play, but the Flyers struggled to generate enough attacking opportunities against Boston’s defence.

Goaltender Jeremy Swayman made 14 saves as the Bruins outshot Philadelphia 32–15. The defeat left the Flyers winless through their first six games, with two points earned from overtime losses.

Devils defeat Canucks as Hischier scores twice

The New Jersey Devils claimed a 4–1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks, with captain Nico Hischier scoring twice in a productive performance at Prudential Center.

Hischier converted twice on the power play, while Jesper Bratt also scored with the man advantage. Jesper Boqvist completed the Devils’ scoring.

Goaltender Jake Allen stopped 21 of 22 shots in his 500th NHL appearance, marking the milestone with a victory.

Vancouver’s only goal came from Linus Karlsson. Despite making 31 saves, Canucks goaltender Leevi Meriläinen could not prevent his side from suffering another defeat.

The result gave New Jersey an important boost as the team looked to build consistency early in the campaign.

Oilers extend winning run against Sharks

The Edmonton Oilers continued their strong start by defeating the San Jose Sharks 3–1 at SAP Center.

Mattias Ekholm opened the scoring in the first period with a powerful shot from the blue line. Vasily Podkolzin doubled Edmonton’s advantage early in the third period, finishing a move created by Connor McDavid.

Alex Formenton then made it 3–0 with a backhand finish on a breakaway, scoring his first goal for the Oilers.

San Jose captain Macklin Celebrini responded with his first goal of the season after returning from a lower-body injury that had kept him out of the previous two games.

However, the Sharks could not complete a comeback as Edmonton held on for its fourth consecutive victory. Goaltender Tristan Jarry made 19 saves, while McDavid recorded an assist to extend his season-opening point streak.

The Oilers improved to 4–0–1, collecting points in each of their first five games.

Early-season momentum builds

The three victories highlighted the contrasting strengths of the teams involved. Boston relied on a powerful late offensive surge, New Jersey capitalised on its power-play opportunities, and Edmonton combined disciplined defending with timely finishing.

For the Flyers, the search for a first win continues, while Vancouver and San Jose will look to recover in their upcoming fixtures.

With the season still in its early stages, these results provide encouraging signs for the Bruins, Devils and Oilers as they pursue stronger positions in their respective divisions.
