Aston Villa ended their long wait for European silverware in emphatic fashion after defeating SC Freiburg 3-0 in the 2026 UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday night in Istanbul.
The English side produced a dominant display at the Beşiktaş Stadium as goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers secured a famous victory for Unai Emery’s men.
Villa entered the final as favourites and lived up to expectations with a composed and clinical performance against the Bundesliga side. The breakthrough arrived in the 41st minute when Tielemans met a cross inside the box and fired a brilliant volley past Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu to give the Premier League club the lead.
Just before half-time, Buendía doubled Aston Villa’s advantage with a stunning curling effort into the top corner, leaving Freiburg with a mountain to climb heading into the second half.
Freiburg attempted to respond after the restart, but Villa remained organised defensively and dangerous in attack. Rogers eventually sealed the victory in the 58th minute after finishing from close range following another flowing attacking move.
The triumph marks Aston Villa’s first European trophy since their European Cup success in 1982 and their first major title in three decades. Manager Unai Emery also extended his remarkable Europa League legacy, winning the competition for a record fifth time.
Thousands of Villa supporters turned Istanbul into a sea of claret and blue as the final whistle sparked emotional celebrations among fans and players alike.
For Freiburg, it was a painful end to what had been a historic European campaign, as the German side fell short in the biggest match in the club’s history.
Aston Villa’s Europa League victory also guarantees them a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, completing a memorable campaign for the Midlands club.
