“My coach has not already worked for Real Madrid,” Riquelme stated, immediately ruling Mourinho out of contention should a new administration take over the Spanish giants.
The presidential hopeful also insisted that Real Madrid must move away from what he described as “short-term thinking” and begin a completely new era focused on long-term planning and modern football leadership.
“Real Madrid cannot continue operating with short-term thinking. This is the time for a genuine change of cycle,” Riquelme said.
He further revealed that discussions are already advanced with a high-profile coach currently managing another club, sparking major speculation across European football.
“We are looking at profiles among the very best coaches in the world, people with the level of experience and leadership needed to manage Real Madrid,” he added.
“I have reached an agreement with a coach who currently manages another team.”
The comments have now thrown Mourinho’s potential Madrid comeback into serious uncertainty. The veteran manager, currently in charge of Fenerbahçe, has repeatedly been linked with a return to elite European football after previously enjoying a successful spell with Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013.
During his first stint in Spain, Mourinho won the La Liga title, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup while building one of the most competitive Real Madrid sides in recent history.
However, Riquelme’s latest remarks suggest that a completely different managerial direction could be taken if there is a change in leadership at the Bernabéu.
The situation is expected to intensify in the coming weeks as speculation continues over both the presidential election and the identity of the mystery coach already lined up by Riquelme.
For now, Mourinho’s dream return to Real Madrid hangs in the balance.
