Here’s exactly what happened:
Lumumba first travelled to Kenya hoping to secure a visa, but his application was unsuccessful. He returned home to DR Congo yesterday. Advised to try again in Ethiopia, where some contacts offered to fast-track the process, the reality quickly set in.
Even with an expedited visa, processing still requires at least one full day. When combined with the long travel time to Mexico (anywhere between 18 to 30 hours depending on connections), it became mathematically impossible for him to arrive in time for the high-stakes match scheduled for Tuesday, 31 March 2026 at Estadio Akron.
Lumumba will now stay home and cheer on the Leopards from afar.
A Painful Miss for the Fans
The Congolese “human statue” became a global sensation during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with his motionless tribute to Patrice Lumumba. His silent yet powerful presence in the stands has been a source of energy and national pride for Les Léopards.
His absence will leave a noticeable gap in the atmosphere as DR Congo fight for a ticket to the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA.
Football passion knows no borders, but sometimes visas, processing times, and long-haul travel simply win.
Wishing Les Léopards and the entire DR Congo delegation all the best tomorrow. The whole nation — including Lumumba watching from home — will be right behind them.
A tough one for the fans. Lumumba remains a true legend regardless.
