Messi Creates New FIFA World Cup Records in Argentina 2-0 Win vs Mexico

By Olamide Oyetunji - Argentina got their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign back on track with an emphatic 2-0 victory over Mexico on Saturday.

Legend Lionel Messi took a touch from Angel Di Maria's pass across the face of the area and drove a low shot from 25 meters (yards) into the bottom corner in the 64th minute.

Messi was the creator when substitute Enzo Fernandez added the second goal in the 87th minute.

Argentina bounced back from a shocking 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia in its opening match. The team is in second place in Group C ahead of its last match against Poland on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old Messi is likely playing in his last World Cup, which is the only major title missing from his collection.

However, the PSG star becomes the first player to create assist in five different World Cup which include 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022.

At 18y 357d Messi scored and assisted in Argentina 6-0 win versus Serbia in 2006.

At 35y 155d Messi scored and assisted in Argentina 2-0 victory over Mexico yesterday.

Lionel Messi is now the youngest and the oldest player to score and assist in a single World Cup game since 1966.

Messi scored his 8th World Cup goal in 21 appearances same as Maradona who scored his 8th on his 21st appearance for Argentina, a day after the two-year anniversary of Maradona’s passing. 

The game which was watched by 88, 966 people at the Lusail Stadium was the biggest World Cup crowd in 28 years.
