Amsterdam, Netherlands — Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare was the match-winner as Ajax secured a narrow 1-0 victory over AZ Alkmaar in Saturday's Noord-Hollandse Derby in the Dutch Eredivisie.
The Super Eagles forward scored the only goal of the encounter in the ninth minute at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, helping Ajax claim all three points in their Matchday 11 fixture.
Arokodare connected with a delivery from Abdellah Ouazane before heading past AZ goalkeeper Jari De Busser to give the hosts an early advantage.
The goal proved decisive as Ajax held on despite sustained pressure from the visitors, who searched unsuccessfully for an equaliser.
Arokodare delivers early breakthrough
Ajax started the encounter with attacking intent and needed just nine minutes to break the deadlock.
Ouazane provided the delivery from the left, allowing Arokodare to rise above his marker and direct a header into the net.
The goal was another important contribution from the Nigerian striker, who has been enjoying a productive campaign since joining the Amsterdam club.
According to Pan Africa Football, Arokodare has now registered five goals and one assist in nine Eredivisie appearances this season.
Ajax suffer Brandt injury setback
Despite taking the lead, Ajax were dealt an injury setback in the 38th minute when German midfielder Julian Brandt was forced off.
Oscar Gloukh replaced Brandt as the home side adjusted their midfield and attacking approach.
Ajax made further changes after the interval, introducing Yves Bissouma and Marcos Leonardo in the 60th minute as they attempted to maintain control of the contest.
AZ also made substitutions in search of a response, with Wesley Hoedt and Calvin Stengs among those introduced, but the visitors struggled to break through the Ajax defence.
Ajax hold on to claim important victory
AZ increased their pressure in the second half and created opportunities to restore parity.
However, Ajax defended their advantage with determination, while goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen produced an important late save to deny Mexx Meerdink and preserve his clean sheet.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory for Ajax, ending their 11-match winless run against AZ Alkmaar.
The result was particularly significant because Ajax had not defeated their regional rivals since March 2022.
Ajax also benefited from Feyenoord's 1-1 draw against Fortuna Sittard, moving back into second place and within one point of the league leaders.
Arokodare continues to impress in Netherlands
Arokodare's latest contribution further strengthens his growing influence at Ajax, with the Nigerian continuing to provide an important attacking presence.
His ability to convert an early opportunity proved decisive in a closely contested derby where clear chances were limited.
For Ajax, the victory provides another boost to their Eredivisie campaign, while Arokodare will be hoping to maintain his scoring form in the club's upcoming fixtures.
