Ghana U-17 Women eliminated from World Cup after quarter-final defeat to Japan

Rabat —
Ghana's Black Maidens have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Japan in their quarter-final encounter on Sunday, 1 November.

Nanami Kurita scored the decisive goal in the 54th minute to send Japan into the semi-finals and bring Ghana's campaign in Morocco to an end.

The two teams played out a closely contested first half, with Ghana defending resolutely to frustrate Japan's attacking efforts. However, the Asian side eventually found a breakthrough nine minutes into the second half.

The goal came after Yuka Kishida's attempt produced a rebound that fell kindly to Kurita, who made no mistake from close range to give Japan the lead.

Ghana attempted to respond and pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Japan maintained their defensive organisation and controlled possession to protect their advantage.

Despite their efforts, the Black Maidens were unable to break down Japan's defence before the final whistle.

Ghana had reached the last eight after defeating Argentina 5-4 on penalties in the Round of 16, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time. Jessica Appiah scored Ghana's goal in that encounter before converting the decisive penalty in the shootout.

However, their hopes of reaching the semi-finals were ended by Japan, who advanced to the final four for the first time since 2016.

The defeat brings Ghana's participation in the tournament to a close, although the quarter-final appearance provides valuable experience for the young players as they continue their development.
