Chelle Names 23-Man Nigeria U23 Squad for Crucial DR Congo Qualifiers

Abuja, Nigeria – Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has named a 23-man squad for Nigeria's crucial two-legged encounter against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the second round of the 2027 Africa U23 Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Goalkeeper Michael Atata, midfielder Daniel Daga and promising youngster Abdulmuiz Adeleke headline the selection as the Olympic Eagles prepare for a difficult battle against the Congolese side.

Atata, who has received invitations to the senior Super Eagles on several occasions, will compete with Samuel James of Finland's SJK FC and Clinton Andy of Rivers United for the goalkeeping position.

The defensive department features Christian Akpan, who plays for Belgian side Genk, Victory Akpe of FC Basel, Vince Osuji of Tromsø IL, Emmanuel Godwin, Odinaka Alfred, Emmanuel Ochobi and Aliu Sugau.

In midfield, Chelle has included John Otomewo of Reims, Daniel Daga of Molde, Wilfred George of Kristiansund, Chibuzor Nwoko of Fulham, Aderemi Adeoye, Sadiq Saleh and Victor Samuel.

The attacking options include Peter Edokpolor of Benfica, Sulaiman Sani of Al-Qadsiah, Umar Abubakar of FC Famalicão, Zadok Yohanna of Brighton, Abdullahi Umar of Hradec Králové and Abdulmuiz Adeleke of Sporting Supreme.

Meanwhile, assistant coach Deniran Ortega is expected to lead the Olympic Eagles during the two-legged contest, with Chelle occupied by the senior Super Eagles' 2027 AFCON qualifying commitments against Tanzania.

The first leg will take place at the Stade TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi on Friday, 13 November, with Nigeria travelling to DR Congo before hosting the return fixture at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on Tuesday, 17 November.

The winner over the two legs will advance to the final qualifying round of the 2027 U23 AFCON, scheduled to take place in Egypt.

The tournament will also determine Africa's representatives at the men's football competition of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Nigeria will be eager to overcome the Congolese challenge as they seek a return to Olympic men's football after missing the last two editions.

The Olympic Eagles previously won gold at Atlanta 1996, silver at Beijing 2008 and bronze at Rio 2016.
