Atletico Madrid beat Levante to extend winning run but remain second in LaLiga

Valencia — Atletico Madrid continued their impressive run of form with a 2-0 victory over Levante on Saturday, 31 October, but Diego Simeone’s side remain second in the LaLiga standings after Barcelona’s emphatic win over Alavés.

Alejandro Grimaldo and Giuliano Simeone scored in either half to secure all three points for Atletico at the Estadi Ciutat de Valencia, extending their winning streak in the league to seven matches.

Atletico started on the front foot and thought they had taken the lead in the 16th minute when Morten Hjulmand found the net. However, the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

The visitors continued to apply pressure and eventually broke the deadlock in the 36th minute. Grimaldo capitalised on a defensive error to fire a left-footed effort past Levante goalkeeper Mathew Ryan.

Levante attempted to respond before the interval, but Atletico maintained their advantage and went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 62nd minute through Giuliano Simeone, who finished clinically after receiving an excellent through ball from Alex Baena.

Atletico managed the remainder of the contest professionally, preventing Levante from finding a way back into the match and securing another important victory.

Atletico remain second behind Barcelona

Despite the victory, Atletico could not move to the top of the table because Barcelona had already defeated Alavés 6-1 on Saturday.

Barcelona therefore remain first with 30 points, while Atletico occupy second place with 28 points. Real Madrid are third with 24 points.

Atletico’s latest success also extended their strong defensive record, with the team having conceded only eight goals in their opening 11 league matches.

The result was another milestone for Diego Simeone, who equalled Luis Aragonés’ record of 344 LaLiga victories as Atletico manager.

Atletico will now turn their attention to the UEFA Champions League, where they are scheduled to face Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
