Shanghai, China — Alexander Zverev overcame a late ankle scare to reach the third round of the 2026 Rolex Shanghai Masters, while Ben Shelton marked his 24th birthday with a straight-sets victory. However, sixth seed Flavio Cobolli suffered an early exit after losing to France’s Adrian Mannarino on Friday, 9 October.
The day’s action at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament produced contrasting fortunes for three of the leading contenders, with Zverev and Shelton progressing and Mannarino claiming one of the notable upsets.
Zverev overcomes late scare against Wu
Top seed Zverev defeated Chinese wild card Wu Yibing 6-4, 7-6(4) to secure his place in the third round.
The German appeared to suffer a left ankle problem late in the second set after stumbling while striking a backhand. The incident occurred at 5-5, briefly raising concerns as he struggled to regain his footing.
Zverev recovered sufficiently to continue without taking a medical timeout. He held his serve and forced a tie-break, where he maintained his composure to complete the victory after one hour and 36 minutes.
Speaking after the match, Zverev acknowledged the difficulty of facing Wu’s aggressive style and welcomed the opportunity to progress.
The victory was Zverev’s 30th hard-court win of the season and his second success against Wu in their Lexus ATP Head2Head meetings.
Year-end world No. 1 remains in sight
Zverev’s campaign in Shanghai also carries significant implications for the battle to finish the season as the ATP’s year-end world No. 1.
The German can secure the distinction by reaching the semi-finals. He could also clinch the honour if Carlos Alcaraz and Shelton are eliminated before the end of the tournament.
Zverev will next face either Alexander Blockx or Quentin Halys as he continues his pursuit of another major milestone in an outstanding 2026 season.
Shelton celebrates 24th birthday with victory
Third seed Shelton enjoyed a memorable birthday by defeating Germany’s Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 7-6(6).
The American left-hander produced a composed performance to win in straight sets, recording his 40th tour-level victory of the season.
Shelton entered the tournament after reaching the US Open final last month. He is also seeking his fifth title of the year and a second ATP Masters 1000 crown following his triumph in Montreal.
The 24-year-old previously reached his first Masters 1000 quarter-final in Shanghai in 2023 and will be hoping to improve on that run this time.
Shelton’s next opponent is France’s Arthur Gea, who defeated 30th seed Ugo Humbert 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
A further victory would also secure Shelton’s qualification for the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals.
Mannarino stuns Cobolli
Mannarino delivered one of Friday’s standout results by defeating sixth seed Cobolli 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
The Frenchman made a strong start, dominating the opening set before Cobolli responded to level the match. Mannarino, however, regained control in the deciding set to complete the upset.
Cobolli struggled with his consistency throughout the contest, committing 42 unforced errors as his Shanghai campaign came to an end.
The defeat followed another early loss for the Italian at the Beijing tournament the previous week, adding to a difficult stretch on the Asian swing.
Mannarino will next face Russia’s Karen Khachanov as he looks to build on his victory over the sixth seed.
Shanghai Masters continues
Zverev and Shelton remain among the leading names in contention as the tournament progresses, while Cobolli’s elimination opens up the draw in his section.
With the year-end No. 1 race and qualification for the ATP Finals adding extra significance to the competition, the coming rounds will be important for players seeking to finish the season strongly.
