SALÉ, Morocco — Zambia’s Copper Princesses have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to France in their final Group D match on Saturday, 24 October.
A 16th-minute goal from Lea Motyka proved decisive as France secured all three points to finish second in the group and advance to the round of 16. The result condemned coach Carol Kanyemba’s side to a third consecutive defeat, ending their campaign without a point.
Zambia had entered the contest hoping to finish their tournament on a positive note after earlier losses to Japan and Venezuela, but they were unable to find an equaliser against the French side.
Motyka punishes Zambia’s defensive lapse
France took the lead in the 16th minute through Motyka, who finished after Maelys Ane drove down the left flank and delivered a cross into the penalty area.
Zambia failed to clear the ball, allowing Motyka to take advantage and put France ahead.
The French team threatened to extend their advantage soon afterwards when a corner created an opportunity for Sharlie Yerro, but she could not convert from close range.
France maintained their narrow lead after the break, managing the game effectively and limiting Zambia’s opportunities to get back into the contest.
Ane was named Player of the Match for her influential display, including the assist for the decisive goal.
Third consecutive defeat ends Zambia’s campaign
The loss completed a difficult group-stage campaign for the Copper Princesses, who had also been beaten by Japan and Venezuela.
Zambia opened their tournament with a 5-0 defeat to Japan before suffering a 3-2 loss to Venezuela, despite twice taking the lead in that match.
Against France, Kanyemba’s players were unable to find a breakthrough, leaving them bottom of Group D with zero points.
The team scored twice and conceded nine goals across their three group matches.
France advance as Japan top Group D
France’s victory secured second place in Group D with six points, behind Japan, who finished top with a perfect nine-point record after defeating Venezuela 2-0 in the other group fixture.
Venezuela finished third with three points, while Zambia ended the group in fourth place.
France will now progress to the round of 16, where they are set to face either the United States or China PR.
For Zambia, the tournament provides valuable experience for a young squad competing on the global stage. Kanyemba and her technical team will now assess the campaign and look to build on the lessons learned ahead of future international assignments.
Despite the disappointment of three defeats, the Copper Princesses will hope the experience helps their players continue developing and competing at the highest level of youth football.
