Victor Boniface eyes January exit from Bayer Leverkusen amid limited playing time

Leverkusen, Germany — Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface is reportedly seeking a January departure from Bayer Leverkusen after struggling to secure regular playing time at the Bundesliga club.

According to reports attributed to Sky Germany, the Nigerian forward has informed his representatives of his desire to leave when the winter transfer window opens, having become frustrated with his limited involvement this season.

However, no advanced negotiations with another club have been reported, and there is no agreement in place for his departure.

Boniface frustrated by lack of opportunities

The 25-year-old has made just one Bundesliga appearance this season, featuring for five minutes in Leverkusen's opening-day 3-2 defeat to newly promoted SV Elversberg.

His situation has also been complicated by his omission from the club's Europa League league-phase squad. Leverkusen opted to register Jonas Hofmann instead after Martin Terrier suffered a long-term injury.

Boniface returned to Leverkusen following a loan spell at Werder Bremen but has struggled to re-establish himself in the first-team plans.

The presence of Patrik Schick among the club's attacking options has further increased competition for the central striker position.

Rolfes responds to Boniface's situation

Despite the transfer speculation, Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has insisted that the Nigerian can still earn his place in the team.

Speaking on October 24, Rolfes said he was not worried about Boniface's situation and encouraged the striker to maintain his fitness and continue working hard.

The Leverkusen chief also acknowledged that pressing and working hard off the ball had not traditionally been among the forward's strongest attributes, while stressing that the club recognises his other attacking qualities.

Rolfes' comments suggest that Leverkusen have not closed the door on Boniface returning to the first-team fold.

Loan move considered a possibility

A loan move is reportedly viewed as the most likely option if Boniface leaves in January, although a permanent transfer has not been ruled out.

A temporary switch could give the Nigerian international an opportunity to secure regular minutes, regain match sharpness and rebuild his confidence.

Nevertheless, his departure will depend on whether interested clubs emerge and whether Leverkusen are willing to sanction a move.

Boniface's future remains uncertain

Boniface enjoyed an impressive spell after joining Leverkusen from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in 2023, playing an important role in the club's historic Bundesliga title-winning campaign in the 2023/24 season.

However, injuries and fitness setbacks have disrupted his progress, while his subsequent loan spell at Werder Bremen did not provide the expected breakthrough.

With the January transfer window approaching, the Super Eagles forward faces an important period in determining the next stage of his career.

For now, no transfer has been confirmed, and Boniface remains a Bayer Leverkusen player.
