UEFA confirms receipt of Real Madrid documents in ongoing Negreira case

UEFA has confirmed that it has received a substantial amount of documentation from Real Madrid relating to its ongoing review of the Negreira case involving Barcelona.

The European football governing body said its Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors had also received the latest documents and would assess them as part of their ongoing review.

“UEFA can confirm that it has received from Real Madrid CF a substantial amount of documents related to the ongoing investigation into FC Barcelona” in the matter involving José María Enríquez Negreira, the former vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, UEFA said.

“The UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors have also received these latest documents which they will assess as part of their ongoing review.”

The Negreira case centres on payments made by Barcelona over a period of years to companies linked to Negreira. Barcelona has maintained that the payments were for technical reports and consultancy services and has denied wrongdoing.

Real Madrid said its submission contains extensive documentation and evidence concerning what the club considers serious issues affecting the integrity of competitions and confidence in the refereeing system. The Madrid club called for the UEFA review to proceed with urgency and said it would continue cooperating with the governing body.

However, UEFA's statement does not announce the opening of a new disciplinary proceeding against Barcelona. Barcelona said the proceedings began in 2023 and have never been formally closed, meaning the latest documents are being considered within the existing investigation.

Barcelona also said UEFA had not made any new requests to the club or forwarded Real Madrid's complaint to it as of Thursday. The Catalan club added that the UEFA proceedings remain subject to the outcome of the criminal case being heard in Spain.

UEFA's disciplinary matters page currently lists the Negreira matter under its investigations involving FC Barcelona, confirming that the case remains on the governing body's disciplinary agenda.

The latest development therefore puts Real Madrid's newly submitted material before UEFA's Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors, who will determine what relevance, if any, the documents have to the ongoing review.
